"Where Vision Meets Implementation"

Chicago Department of Transportation

Project:
State Street Improvements

Location:
State Street (Congress to Lake Street)
Chicago, Illinois

Project Value:
$25,000,000

Completed:
October, 1997

Description:
The State Street Renovation Project consisted of the following components:

  • Demolition of existing structures;
  • Construction of new retaining wall and backfilling of existing vaulted sidewalks;
  • Widening of street; Removal and replacement of concrete and bituminous pavement
  • Installation of structural steel beams and columns to support reinforced concrete planters;
  • Relocation of utilities and installation of new utilities Structural modifications and new architectural kiosks at existing subway entrances;
  • Spread footings and drilled pier foundations for light poles;
  • Rehabilitation of existing structural beams, new columns, and structural slabs for vaulted sidewalks;
The d'Escoto Inc. team was involved from the pre-construction stage through project completion, providing construction management and inspection, document control, punch list work, and close-out. The renovation of State Street removed an unsuccessful circa 1979 transit mall, allowed private vehicular traffic back onto the street, and created a streetscape that complements the area's historic buildings. Sidewalks were narrowed to create a greater sense of activity on the street, trees and sidewalk planters were installed, and historic elements, such as streetlights that are a recasting of lights that once lined the street and stylistically appropriate subway kiosks, were introduced.
